Long Beach, CA - Senior Scott Clayton (pictured) shot a school-record 63 in Thursday's first round of play at the Del Walker Invitational at Virginia Country Club to take hold of the individual lead as the UC Riverside men's golf team is tied for fourth place out of 16 teams with two rounds remaining.
The second round was suspended due to darkness on Thursday evening and will be completed on Friday morning with the third round of play to start immediately following.
Clayton's seven-under-par 63 tied the Highlanders school record set by Brendan Steele back in 2003-04, and is a personal best for the San Bernardino, CA native. Clayton currently leads Daniel Crone of St. Mary's by one stroke.
Tom Lo fired an even-par 70, Kevin Fitzgerald carded a 71 while Andrew Patipaksiri and Roy Kim shot identical 73s and Matt Fitzgerald fired a 75 to round out the Highlanders total.
As a team UC Riverside shot 350 and is tied with Santa Clara for fourth place. They are just six strokes back of third-place Oregon and eight strokes off the lead held by Colorado State and St. Mary's.
The tournament is a "six count five" format, in which each team fields six players with the five-best 18-hole scores from each round counting towards the team total.
