UC Riverside vs. Cal State Northridge Game Notes
The Big West season has reached its midpoint, and the Highlanders find themselves in the unenviable position of staring up at the rest of the league at 2-7. With seven conference games remaining on UCR’s docket, the climb back into playoff contention begins with Thursday evening’s home game against Cal State Northridge, currently 3-5 and in seventh place in the Big West. The Highlanders have struggled against the Matadors of late having lost 11 straight games dating back to the 2003-04 season. That streak includes a 64-50 loss at CSUN on January 14 of this year in which UC Riverside went scoreless over the final 5:14 of play as the Matadors closed the game on a 14-0 run.
Kyle Austin’s 17 points tied for game-high honors, but the Highlanders made just 4 of 26 shots in the second period falling to 1-3 in conference in the process. Kenny Daniels led the Matadors with 17 points as they picked up their first Big West win of the season to improve to 1-3.
CSUN has won two of five games since that meeting with UCR, including a 76-69 win over UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, January 30. Willie Galick scored 19 points in the win. Two of their recent losses are by one point each—a 73-72 loss at Cal Poly and a 69-68 loss to Long Beach State.
