Brantly's Two Homers Help Highlanders Complete 3-Game Sweep Of BYU
2/20/2010 5:16:33 PM | Baseball
UC Riverside 11, BYU 6 Box Score
Robert Brantly (pictured) became the first member of the Highlanders to hit two home runs in a single game since Aaron Wible did it on April 5, 2007 against UC Santa Barbara, and it helped UC Riverside to an 11-6 win and a three-game sweep of visiting BYU on Sunday at the Riverside Sports Complex.
Brantly's first homer of the game came in the bottom of the first with the Highlanders up 1-0 and Michael Hur standing on third following an RBI triple. The sophomore catcher turned on a Chunner Nyberg offering and deposited it over the right field fence for his first homer of the season and a 3-0 UCR lead.
The Highlanders gave back two runs in the second when Dane Nielson laced a single to left plating a pair. The Cougars took the lead the following inning as they strung together two singles, a double and a walk to go up by one, 4-3.
UCR got the lead back in the bottom of the third when Hur followed Joey Gonzales's double with a homer that bounced off the top of the centerfield fence and out of the field of play.
After BYU picked up another run to tie the game at five in the top of the fourth, the Highlanders effectively put the game out of reach with a four-run bottom half of the inning. Hur knocked in his third run of the game in the frame, and Justin Shults knocked in a pair with a two-out single to right for a 9-5 UCR lead.
Dustin Emmons got the start for the Highlanders pitching five complete innings for the win. Donovan Gonzales replaced him in the sixth and allowed just two hits and struck out four the rest of the way for his first save in a UCR uniform.
Gonzales gave up his lone run of the game in the sixth after giving up a lead off triple to Alex Hancock and allowing a run-scoring ground out off of Nielson's bat. Brantly extended the lead to four again in the bottom of the sixth with a solo shot over the left field fence. Tony Nix's RBI single in the bottom of the seventh completed the scoring and gave the Highlanders their final 11-6 margin of victory.
UCR is off on Sunday before hosting Bethune-Cookman on Monday at the Riverside Sports Comples. First pitch is slated for 3 pm PT.
