Indianapolis, IN—The NCAA announced today that six UC Riverside athletics programs received perfect single year Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores of 1,000 for the 2008-09 academic year. In addition, the Highlanders women's tennis program was honored with a Public Recognition Award for posting a multi-year APR in the top 10 percent of all women's tennis teams.
The six programs with perfect single year APR scores are men's and women's cross country, men's and women's tennis, volleyball, and women's golf. In addition, fifteen of UC Riverside's 17 sports saw an increase in their multi-year APR.
"We are extremely pleased with the overall success of our teams relative to their academic progress rates," UCR Executive Associate Athletics Director Janet Lucas stated. "It is important that our athletic programs are representative of the emphasis UCR places on a quality education and graduation. In particular, we are very proud of the public recognition for the women's tennis team which has distinguished itself nationally."
The APR provides a real-time "snapshot" of a team's academic success each semester by looking at the academic progress of every student-athlete. It includes eligibility, retention, and graduation as factors in the rate calculation and provides a picture of the current academic culture in each sport.
Only one team received a contemporaneous penalty, down from four during the 2006-07 season and two for 2007-08.
