Volleyball Wins Second Straight With Sweep Of CSU Bakersfield

Stockton, CA - The UC Riverside volleyball team won back-to-back games for the first time since the 2009 season on Friday as they continued the Hilton Stockton Invitational with a 3-0 blanking of CSU Bakersfield (3-8) by the scores of 25-16, 27-25, and 25-16.
With the Highlanders 3-0 win over Loyola Marymount earlier on Friday, UCR improves its record to 3-9 in the season.
It was a banner day for UC Riverside athletics as the women's soccer team beat North Texas, 2-1, and the men's soccer team defeated UNLV 2-1. It is the first time that all three teams won on the same date since September 8, 2006.
The last time the Highlanders volleyball team won consecutive matches was on November 6 and 7, 2009 against Cal State Northridge and CSU Bakersfield respectively. The last time UCR swept back-to-back matches came on August 30, 2008 with victories over Bradley and Gonzaga.
In the first set, UC Riverside turned a 3-3 tie into a 14-3 advantage as Amanda Vialpando served 11 straights times. Bianca Endersby recorded five of UCR's points during that span, while Megan Reza added two.
The Highlanders would take a 1-0 lead in the match as they cruised to a 25-16 victory.
Things were different in the second set as the Highlanders fell behind 18-11. They scored four straight to get within three, but the Runners went up at set-point 24-21.
UC Riverside then rallied with three consecutive Vialpando kills and an attack error by CSUB to take a 25-24 advantage.
The Runners tied the set at 25, but another Vialpando kill and attack error by CSUB completed the Highlanders come-from-behind 27-25 win.
After losing the first point in set three, UC Riverside tied it at one and proceeded to go up 17-11 as they held on for the 25-16 win.
Three Highlanders recorded double-digit kills with Vialpando leading all players with 19 kills and 11 digs. Shelby LeDuff added 12 kills while Endersby had 11.
UCR concludes play at the Hilton Stockton Invitational with a 5:00 pm match against San Jose State on Saturday.
