Men's Tennis Rallies For 4-3 Victory Over BYU-Hawai'i

Riverside—The UC Riverside Men's Tennis Team made a furious rally Tuesday afternoon to come from behind and defeat BYU-Hawai'i 4-3 at Andulka Park.
The Highlanders looked to be in control early as Luis Gastao and Calvin Ngo won their doubles match at number three, 8-3. The Seasiders evened the score with an 8-3 doubles win at two, and Jimmy Roberts and Marcus Vizcarra seemed primed for victory at the top spot before BYUH rattled off the remaining points to earn a 9-7 victory, and the first point of the match.
In singles, Julian Ruffin and Ngo made quick work of their opponents at numbers three and four, winning 6-0, 6-1, and 6-0, 6-0 respectively to give UCR a 2-1 lead in the match.
Gastao and Kelly Dickson then dropped their singles contests at numbers two and six as BYU went back up, 3-2. But Kevin Griffin came through with a 6-2, 6-3 win at #5 to tie the match at 3-3.
The match came down to the top slot, pitting Roberts against Yevhen Zakharov. Zakharov won the first set 6-3 but Roberts won the second 6-2 to force a third set. In the final, Roberts found himself down 4-1 but rallied winning six of the final seven points to win 7-5, lifting the Highlanders to a 4-3 win.
"I'm very proud of the guys today—they worked hard," Head Coach Tim Downey stated. "It was a tough win and I'm really excited that we came away with it."
The Highlanders return to action this weekend traveling to UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly for a pair of Big West matches beginning April 6.
