Riverside—In association with Earth Day, the UC Riverside Athletics Department and the Office of Sustainability teamed up to launch a brand new promotional video encouraging faculty, students and staff to “pitch” in and get serious about recycling (Watch The VIdeo).
“When I was initially approached by Dr. Cook (Director of Sustainability) about this opportunity I knew it was something we had to do. Any opportunity we get to showcase our student-athletes as positive leaders on campus is a must,” said Assistant Athletics Director/Marketing, Jason List.
“We shot this entirely over one day and it happened to be only two days after our athletes returned from Spring Break. The fact they all made time to be a part of the video showed they really cared about the initiative.”
Participating in this video was women’s soccer player Tyler Cunningham who said, “I think having athletes send this message was important because it shows that even with all the other things we are focusing on, it is still important to us that we take pride in our community and how it looks.”
Over the last year the Highlander Athletics department has incorporated a number of green initiatives into its operation, including handing out over 1,000 energy efficient light bulbs following their men’s basketball game against Long Beach State this past January.
The department also replaced a number of its non-energy efficient light bulbs with new compact florescent bulbs as part of the recently remodel of the Troesh Family Hall of Champions.
A new water-bottle hydration station was also added this past Fall inside the Athletics and Dance Building to cut down on the number of plastic bottles used.
