No. 67 Cal Poly Sweeps Men's Tennis In Big West Championship First Round

Indian Wells, CA—No. 67 nationally ranked and #2 seeded Cal Poly defeated the #7 seeded UC Riverside Men's Tennis Team 4-0 Thursday morning in the first round of the Big West Conference Championship at Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
In doubles, the Mustangs claimed the match at the top spot, 8-2, but the Highlanders battled at two and three. In the middle, Julian Ruffin and Kevin Griffin were knotted at 6-6 when the bottom contest was called in favor of Cal Poly, 8-5, over Luis Gastao and Calvin Ngo.
With the doubles point going to the Mustangs, UCR needed to win four of six in singles to move on to the second round. Unfortunately, CP was too tough as Marcus Vizcarra dropped a 6-0, 6-1 decision at number five, Jimmy Roberts lost 6-0, 6-2 at number one, and Ruffin fell at number three, 6-3, 6-0.
The matches at number two with Gastao, four with Ngo, and six with Griffin went unfinished once the four points were earned by Cal Poly.
The Highlanders conclude the season with a 3-21 overall record, while the Mustangs move on to face the winner of the #3 seed Pacific vs. #6 seed UC Davis match on Friday.
