Brian Smith earned All-America honors as a water polo player at UC Riverside during the 1972 season leading the Highlanders to numerous tourament championships during his three years on the suqad. He was named to the All-California Athletic Association teams on three occasions, and set the Highlanders single-season goal scoring record with 82 during the 1972 season. After graduation, Smith coached in the aquatics program at UC Riverside.
