Barfield earned All-America honors on four occasions during his UC Riverside track and field career, and was the 1972 NCAA Division II long jump champion. He was named the Highlanders Male Athlete of the Year on two occasions, and was the recipient of the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Award for academic and athletics achievement.
