Donna Hammond-Mares became the first women's basketball player in UC Riverside history to be named an All-American in 1982, and she earned Academic All-America honors that same season. That year, she led the nation in scoring averageing 27.9 points per game while being named NCAA Co-Player of the Year and CCAA Female Athlete of the Year. At the time of her graduation, Hammon-Mares held the school single-season and career scoring average and blocked shots marks.
