Edmund Otis was the captain of UC Riverside's national championship karate teams in 1979 and 1980, and won an individual national championship in 1980. From 1981 through 2006, he held teaching positions at UCR in humanities, psychology, education, honors and physical education. As of 2010, Otis continues to serve as the director of martial arts at UC Riverside which is the largest collegiate martial arts program in the United States.
