Karate

John Flippen was instrumental in starting the UC Riverside karate program in 1970. He received degrees in anthropology and education from UCR, and competed for the karate team in 1972, 1975, 1978 and 1980. Flippen won an individual championship in 1980, and helped UC Riverside to team titles in 1978 and 1980. He also won the Mountain State Championship in 1979 and the South-Western Regional Championship in 1981.
