John Lowenstein was UC Riverside's first scholarship athlete, and he justified that distinction in spades earning All-America honors in 1968 and spending 16 seasons in the major leagues.

As a senior, he led the squad with a .393 batting average, 12 doubles, four home runs, 81 total bases, 11 stolen bases, a .488 on base percentage, and a .600 slugging percentage.

Originally drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the 18th round of the 1968 amateur draft, Lowenstein broke into the big leagues with Cleveland in 1970. He later played for the Texas Rangers and the Baltimore Orioles.

A Riverside native, Lowenstein had the best seasons of his pro career as a member of the Orioles helping the team to the World Series in 1979, and to a world championship in 1983. During the 1983 series against the Philladelphia Phillies "Wheeze Kids", Lowenstein hit .385 with a .692 slugging percentage.

His post-playing career saw him garner four Emmys for his play-by-play coverage of the Orioles.
