Riverside—UC Riverside allowed Sacramento State to tie the score at 2-2 with one second remaining in regulation. Neither team could score in the two overtime periods that followed and the score stayed tied at 2-2 as UCR (3-2-1) tied its first match of the season Sunday afternoon at the UCR Soccer Stadium.
The Highlanders got on the board first at 14:25 when junior captain Joel Crompton found the right side of the net from 18 yards out for a 1-0 UCR lead. Crompton took a short pass from sophomore Zach Walker off of a free kick and banged it home for his second goal of the season.
UCR made it 2-0 at the 50:39 mark in the second half when Walker picked up his second assist of the season and of the game whe he found sophomore Robert Cate in thebox, who turned and beat Hornet keeper Ryan Kenny for his first goal of the season.
The Hornets (0-5-1) came right back three minutes later on a perfectly placed crossing pass that was headed in by Cody Shields to cut the UCR lead to 2-1.
Crompton almost put UCR up 3-1 late in the second half, but his shot, off a free-kick just outside the box, hit the side of the net leaving the UCR crowd thinking they had scored. All was for not as the referee signaled no goal and the game resumed with the score at 2-1.
A flurry of shots by Sacramento State the last five minutes eventually took its toll on the Highlander defense. An incredible goal was scored with one second on the clock off the foot of Fernando Cabadas for the Hornets. Cabadas took a cross and bicycle-kicked in the game-tying goal by a diving Highlander keeper Charles Alamo.
The two teams sent long passes up and down the field in both overtime periods looking to beat one another's fatigued defenses. Each team's defense held strong as the teams played to their first ties of the season.
