Box Score and Play-By-Play
The UC Riverside Women's Basketball Team finished its preseason schedule Saturday afternoon with a 73-62 win over Cal Poly Pomona. Amber Cox's (pictured) 20 points led four Highlanders in double figure scoring, and she combined with Rheya Neabors, Rhaya Neabors and Marissa Rivera to key second half runs of 17-4 and 17-2, which turned a 12-point deficit into a 16-point advantage.
The Highlanders were in control early scoring the first nine points of the ballgame. UCR still led by eight, 30-22, with 1:46 remaining in the first half, but the Broncos ended the period on an 8-0 run capped by Reyana Colson's heave from 28 feet to tie the score at 30. Cox scored 13 scored of her points before the break connecting on three of three from three-point range and five of six overall.
Cal Poly Pomona began the second half in much the same way they ended the first—on an offensive tear. The Broncos scored 14 of the first 16 points of the period to lead 44-32 with 15:31 to go.
A Megan Ford free throw for Cal Poly Pomona capped that 14-2 run just after a UC Riverside timeout. Following the make, the Highlanders turned up the defensive pressure and regained the lead, 49-48, with 10:48 remaining after a 17-4 run. Rheya Neabors scored seven points during the spurt, Marissa Rivera added six and TréShonti Nottingham chipped in with four. Rivera also added four steals in the second half to help in the comeback.
With 8:36 left in the game, UCR still clung to a one-point lead, 53-52, but another 17-2 Highlanders sealed the deal giving them a 70-54 advantage with 3:17 to go.
The Neabors sisters scored 13 (Rhaya) and 10 (Rheya) points while Rivera added 12. Alyssa Morris led UCR with nine boards, and the Highlanders outscored the Broncos in the paint 32-16.
UC Riverside begins the 2009-10 regular season at home on Friday the 13th against Miami (FL). Tip off is scheduled for 7 pm PT at the Student Recreation Center. UCR undergraduate students are admitted free to the SRC with their student ID.
