Men's Golf Opens Season at UTA Waterchase Invitational

Final Results
Arlington, TX - The UC Riverside men's golf team closed out play at the UTA Waterchase Invitational by falling four places on Tuesday to finish tied for 15th of 19 squads with a three-round 917 total. The Highlanders shot identical 296s during the first and second rounds on Monday but posted a 325 third-round score as only one UCR player shot in the 70s during Tuesday's concluding round.
Senior Scott Clayton (pictured) tied for 16th individually with a three-round 220 (75-70-75), finishing first on the Highlanders squad for the 16th time in his career.
Kevin Fitzgerald tied for 58th firing 73-75-81 (229) while Andrew Patipaksiri tied for 60th with a three-round 230 (71-75-84). Roy Kim (77-76-89=242) and Daniel Brainard (84-76-85=245) round out the Highlanders team.
Rice University (858) held on to their first day lead to take home team medalist honors by two strokes over host UT Arlington (860). Wichita State (872) finished third followed by Sam Houston State (880) and Texas State (883).
Wichita State's Dustin Garza won individual medalist honors with an eight-under-par 208 (68-70-70).
The Highlanders return to the links on October 5-6 at the Desert Intercollegiate Invitational in Palm Desert, CA.
First & Second Rounds
Arlington, TX - The UC Riverside men's golf team opened up the 2009 season at the UTA Waterchase Invitational on Monday, and after 36 holes of play the Highlanders find themselves tied for 11th out of 19 teams with a two-round 596. Complete Results
The Highlanders shot identical 296s in each round, led by senior Scott Clayton's (pictured) 75-70=145 to tie him for 17th individually.
Junior Andrew Patipaksiri is just one stroke back at 146 (71-75), while redshirt junior Kevin Fitzgerald is tied for 37th with scores of 73-75=148. Newcomer Roy Kim (77-76=153) and junior Daniel Brainard (84-76=160) are tied for 67th and 92nd respectively to round out the scores for the Highlanders.
Rice University has a three-shot lead over the competition as they fired a four-under-par two-round 572. UT Arlington (575), Wichita State (578), North Texas (582), and Texas State (582) complete the top-five.
Wichita State's Dustin Garza and Rice's Michael Buttacavoli are tied for the individual lead shooting a six-under-par 138.
The final round of play at the UT Waterchase Invitational concludes on Tuesday morning.
