Mission Viejo, CA - The UC Riverside men's golf team shot the second-lowest round of the day to jump up one spot and finish in seventh place out of nine teams at the Big West Conference Championships on Tuesday at Mission Viejo Country Club.
The Highlanders fired a 10-over-par 298 during the third round of play, benefiting from scores of 71 from Andrew Patipaksiri, 74 from Kevin Fitzgerald (pictured), 75 from Scott Clayton, and 78 from Tom Lo. Only 2010 champion UC Irvine carded a lower third round score (297).
With its low third-round tally, UCR moved out of a tie for eighth place and finished seventh with a 911 (306-307-298) total. They were just one shot back of sixth place UC Davis at 910.
The Anteaters won the team title with a nine-over-par 873. UCI's John Chin also claimed individual medalist honors with a seven-under-par 209 (68-70-71).
The University of Pacific placed second as a team at 890, while Long Beach State (895) finished third, UC Santa Barbara (897) fourth, and Cal State Northridge (903) fifth. UC Davis was sixth with UCR right behind them, with Cal Poly (925) and Cal State Fullerton (929) rounding out the field.
Heading into the final round of play in a tie for sixth individually, Fitzgerald moved up two spots to finish in a tie for fourth overall with a three-over-par 219 (74-71-74).
Clayton tied for 11th place with rounds of 71-77-75 (223), while Patipaksiri tied for 16th with a 225 (77-77-71).
Rounding out the Highlanders squad is Tom Lo (84-86-78=248) and Robbie Mamo (90-82-85=257), who finished 44th and 45th respectively.
This tournament concludes the regular season for the team. UC Riverside will await word if they receive any at-large bid the NCAA regional next week.
