UC Riverside Men's Soccer Can Clinch A Postseason Berth Tuesday Night
10/31/2011 11:51:00 AM | Men's Soccer
Riverside—The UC Riverside Men's Soccer Team controls its own destiny with regards to conference postseason play this weekend in its Saturday, November 5 home match vs. UC Davis—if the Highlanders win, they are in. But UCR might not need to wait that long to celebrate its first-ever appearance in the Big West Conference Tournament. If Cal Poly and Cal State Northridge lose their respective matches Tuesday evening, the Highlanders will punch their ticket to the postseason regardless of the outcome of Saturday's match.
Here's how the math works.
The Matadors host UC Santa Barbara on Tuesday evening, and travel to Cal State Fullerton on Saturday. A loss to the Gauchos would keep CSUN at 11 points with one match to play. If they win the Fullerton match, and the Highlanders lose on Saturday, both teams would have 14 points, but UCR owns the tiebreaker with the Matadors by virtue of a 2-1 win on October 19.
Cal Poly hosts UC Irvine on Tuesday night and travels to UC Santa Barbara on Friday, November 4. A loss to the Anteaters keeps the Mustangs at 10 points, and with one match left, Cal Poly would be four points behind UC Riverside making the outcome of the final matches for both squads irrelevent with regards to filling out the postseason field.
That's not to say Saturday's match is unimportant for the Highlanders. Even if the Cal Poly and CSUN matches play out in the fashion outlined above, UC Riverside will still be battling for seeding. And another home match at the UCR Soccer Stadium, where UCR is 5-2-1 this season, would be a welcome sight for Highlanders fans.
