Riverside—The UC Riverside Men's Soccer Team Upended Nebraska Omaha, 1-0, on the final day of the UCR/Courtyard by Marriott Soccer Invitational Sunday morning to remain undefeated with a perfect 7-0-0 mark on the season. (Box Score/Video HIghlights)
It is the fifth shutout of the year for UCR, just one off of the program record last set during the 2007 campaign.
The Highlanders nearly went up 1-0 with 23:10 gone in the first as the Mavs committed a foul in their defensive box. Jose Diaz stepped up to take the penalty kick, but goalkeeper Matt Grosey made the save to keep the match scoreless.
UC Riverside finally broke through with 4:32 remaining in the first period. Otis Earle streaked down the left side and found Juan Mendoza in the middle of the field. Mendoza chipped it over the defense, and Jimmy Martinez was there to put it in the back of the net.
The Highlanders outshot the Mavs 11-3 over the first 45 minutes of play, but all that changed in the second period as UNO was credited with 11 of the 15 shots after the break. Despite the flurry of activity in the Highlanders defensive end of the field, none of those attempts crossed the goal line, and UCR held on for the 1-0 victory.
The Highlanders are back in action this weekend as they finish their non-conference schedule with a Sunday, September 23 home match with CSU Bakersfield. Kick off is slated for 7 pm.
