The UC Riverside Athletics Department hosted its 2012-13 Scotty Awards on Tuesday evening at Hub 302 on UCR's campus, honoring the achievements of the 2012-13 Highlanders student-athletes.
This year, the UC Riverside Athletics Department handed out 10 awards to distinguished student-athletes for their accomplishments during the 2012-13 season.
The first award was the Highlanders Spirit Award, presented to UCR Spirit Squad member Radiance Jackson. Jackson demonstrated leadership, commitment, and a high level of skill while representing the UC Riverside spirit squads with pride and distinction.
The next award went to men's track and field athlete Kenny Grimble as the recipient of the Golden Ankle Wrap. The Golden Ankle Wrap award is given annually to the UCR student athlete who went above and beyond the expectations of his or her peers, coaches, and the sports medicine team with regards to their committment to rehabilitating an injury.
According to the Highlanders sports medicine staff, Grimble was faced with an injury that kept him off the track for over six months this year. Although the nature of the injury did not require surgery, he had to overcome a long and tedious rehab process to work his way back to team activity. He was determined, consistent, compliant, and persistent with recovering from his injury.
Grimble overcame setbacks in his rehab in addition to not being able to workout with his teammates for an extended period of time. He followed through with anything and everything the athletic training staff asked of him, and he was able to do so with an award-winning smile and positive attitude.
The third award was the Iron Highlander Award, given to a male and female student-athlete for their dedication in the weight room. Baseball athlete Cody Hough won the award on the men's side, while Softball senior Alexis Pickett was the recipient on the women's side.
Hough came into the weight room ready to work every day, even on game days. Head Strength and Conditioning Coach Jason Salyer went on to state "I am sure if I opened up the weight room on the weekend he would be standing outside the door waiting when I got there."
Hough never complains and always has a great attitude, and gives his best effort every single day.
According to the judging panel, Pickett has been the epitome of what the strength and conditioning staff look for in an Iron Highlander recipient. Not only has she been consistent in her training, but she also has been passionate about it which has made a tremendous difference.Â
Pickett always strove to improve each and every day, and worked out with enthusiasm and zeal.
Men's Cross Country/Track and Field athlete Seth Totten was the recipient of the next award, the Hueston M. & Margaret W. Harper Award Scholarship, presented annually to the UCR varsity athlete—a freshman, sophomore or junior—whose athletic and scholarly achievements are deemed most outstanding. The recipient must have a GPA of at least 3.20.
The next award went to senior Men's Soccer athlete Humberto Santiago for the Lindy-Citizenship Award, given annually to the student-athlete who has demonstrated exceptional dedication and service to the university and the community at large during the current school year.
A double major in mathematics and environmental sciences, Santiago has been a valuable member of student organizations Golden Arches and SAM's. This past year he was elected by his peers to serve as the Golden Arches chairperson. He is also a CHASS First Year Experience peer mention, a SAAC representative, and a SAM's co-president.
During spring splash this year, Santiago volunteered to promote a safe and healthy environment by transporting intoxicated students to hydration location for care. He has also assisted with the organization of High Groove Elementary School Day, and presents on and off campus to students about health, nutrition, and sex education.
Finally, he was one of six students at UCR to be nominated for Outstanding Services to Campus and Community.
Men's Track & Field thrower Travis Smith won the SAAC Sports Moment of the Year Award for breaking both the UCR indoor and outdoor shot put records, and becomming an All-American in the process.
Other nominees for the Sports Moment of the Year were baseball closer Trevor Frank for earning three saves in each of the Highlanders victories over No. 21 ranked UC Irvine on March 28-30; men's basketball senior Robert Smith for hitting a 50-plus foot buzzer beater at the half over Pacific on March 2; and Softball freshman Ashley Ercolano hitting a walk-off home run to give UCR a 7-5 win over Weber State on February 24.
The seventh award of the evening was the SAAC Freshman of the Year Award, given to Women's Basketball guard Brittany Crain and Men's Soccer goalie Ashkan Khosravi.
The SAAC Freshman of the Year award is presented to the true freshman student-athlete or student athletes who have ditsringuished themselves in the areas of Scholastics, Athletics, Attitude and Connection to the Community.

Coach Downey concludes: "Kevin epitomizes the goal of UCR Athletics—that of 'building champions'!"
The winner of the Female Student-Athlete of the Year was Women's Softball athlete Kayla White.
White earned her third-career All-Big West Conference First-Team honor this season, leading the league in batting average and triples while ranking second in slugging percentage, hits, and total bases, fourth in stolen bases, fifth in home runs, seventh in runs, and ninth in on base percentage.
Even more impressive was that in conference only games, White led the Big West in batting average, slugging percentage, on base percentage, hits, and total bases.
She led the team with 18 multi-hit games and recorded a team-best 11 game hitting streak from March 3-17. At the conclusion of the season, White had another streak going, hitting safely in 10 straight games.
For the year, she batted .382 with a .682 slugging percentage. She had 65 hits and 37 runs, while tallying 33 RBI and stealing 19 bases.
The Male Student-Athlete of the Year award went to Track and Field thrower Travis Smith.
Smith was honored earlier in the evening as the winner of the SAAC Sports Moment of the Year Award. Breaking both the indoor and outdoor school records was just the tip of the iceberg, as he traveled to Fayetteville, Arkansas for the 2013 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships.
There, he entered the competition ranked 15th in the nation in the shot put, but his second attempt cleared 60 feet, 11.5 inches, good enough for ninth place. That earned him a second-team All-American honor, after previously being name honorable mention All-American in the shot put at the 2012 NCAA outdoor track and field championship.
Smith continued the 2013 season by winning the Big West Conference in the shot put and finishing third in the discus. At the NCAA West Prelim last week, his top mark in the shot put left him an inch short of qualifying for the NCAA Championship, and another potential All-American honor.
