Raquel Hefflin Wins Big West Championship As Women's Cross Country Places Fourth

Riverside, CA—UC Riverside cross country runner Raquel Hefflin won the 6k Big West Conference Championship Saturday morning with a new school and personal-best record of 20:12.6. She beat out the next competitor by 10 seconds to become the first Highlanders women's runner to win the individual league title in the program's Division I history. Complete Results. Video Recap.
UCR redshirt freshman Faith Makau was the Highlanders second finisher, placing fifth overall in a PR time of 20:48.8. Both Hefflin and Makau earn All-Conference honors by way of finishing in the top-10.
As a team, UC Riverside came in fourth out of nine squads totaling 95 points.
UC Davis took home the crown with 36 points, followed by Cal Poly (66) in second and UC Santa Barbara in third (86). Cal State Fullerton was fifth (149), CSUN sixth (150), Long Beach State seventh (177), UC Irvine eighth (194), and Hawai'i ninth (258).
Weslie Totten was UCR's third finisher, crossing the line in a 6k personal-best time of 21:30.6 to place 15th. Brianna Simmons was 32nd in a new PR time of 22:01.3, while Maryann Holliday placed 47th in 23:00.2, and Elizabeth Guzman was 55th in 23:25.7.
The Highlanders now have two weeks to prepare for the NCAA West Regional Championship slated for Friday, November 14 at 11:00 am PT in Palo Alto, CA.
