DAILY PRESS: Hard Work Has (Former Highlander) Aaron Long At The Brink Of Realizing His Dream

Victorville, CA—Being good enough isn't good enough for a freak athlete from the High Desert—not if nobody sees you.
Aaron Long played soccer, football and tennis for Serrano, but he knew that alone wouldn't allow him to play soccer professionally. The UC Riverside graduate is currently playing in the United Soccer League for Seattle Sounders FC 2, the second team of the highest-attended Major League Soccer squad.
To get there, he needed to attract the eyes of prospective employers. Long's play does a fine job of that, so the Oak Hills native needed to get to a place where those eyes would have a chance to see him.
Long knew early on that high school soccer wasn't going to be enough to get him the college scholarship he needed to make his dream a reality. So he played club soccer, first with Apple Valley Storm and eventually with Arsenal FC South, a club based in Murrieta.
"I had to drive an hour down the hill two or three times a week just to be seen by college coaches," Long said. "I don't think you're going to get enough just playing at the high school."
