Hamilton, NY—The UC Riverside Men's Soccer Team was looking to climb back to the .500 mark on Sunday afternoon, but a Colgate goal with just 2:15 gone in the first overtime period gave the Red Raiders a 2-1 victory over the visiting Highlanders.
Colgate (1-1-1) got on the board in the 11th minute of play when Ethan Kutler collected the rebound of his own missed shot, and beat UC Riverside keeper Ashkan Khosravi for his first score of the season.
Michael Salazar pulled the Highlanders (1-3-0) even 11 minutes later when he slotted a Ricardo Ruiz pass through the Red Raiders' defense for his second goal of 2015.
It remained a 1-1 match throughout the remainder of regulation, and the teams headed into overtime. The Highlanders were 1-1-3 in their five overtime matches a year ago, but this was the team's first extra time endeavor this fall.
The first shot of the first overtime period, was also the last. Kutler lined up for a free kick for Colgate with just over two minutes gone in OT. His restart found Chase Pagani who crossed the ball to Aram Ouligian, and Ouligian's one-timer gave the Red Raiders the win.
The Highlanders return to the West Coast for a pair of matches this week taking on San Francisco at home on Thursday, September 10 at 7 pm PT, and traveling to UCLA on Sunday, September 13 for a 5 pm kick off against the number one team in the nation.
