Women's Cross Country Takes 6th At UCR Invitational, Faith Makau Finishes 4th

Riverside, CA—The UC Riverside Women's Cross Country Team took a sixth-place finish at the 37th Annual UCR Cross Country Invitational, finishing second among Big West teams. The Highlanders finished with a team score of 162.
Redshirt senior Faith Makau paced the Highlanders with a time of 20:13.3, good for the top finish among Big West participants and the fourth-fastest mark overall. The Arkansas women took first place in both the Women's 6k Invitational and 5k Open events. Official results for all four races can be found here.

"The ladies raced their butts off today. Faith out front was a really nice treat, she really raced with a lot of heart and led our group," Head Coach Robert Hanson said. "It was really nice to watch our team finish in the top-nine.  I feel like we really defended our home turf."

MEET NOTES
Makau took a fourth-place finish for the second consecutive race, earning the eighth top-five finish of her career. She surpassed her previous best finish at the 2014 UCR Invitational, which had been seventh.
Junior Emily Sanchez finished in the top 20 for the second consecutive race and the third time in her career. Her time of 20:54.4 was more than a minute faster than her previous top time at the 2016 UCR Invitational, placing her 43 spots higher than last year.
Sophomore Samantha Poliakon jumped up 73 spots from her finish at the 2016 UCR Invitational. It was the fourth-highest finish of her career.
