Men's Soccer's Comeback Falls Short in Double OT

RIVERSIDE, Calif.- After a hard fought match where the Highlanders came back from being down 3-1, the UC Riverside Men's Soccer Team fell in double overtime to Saint Mary's 4-3.

UCR got out to an early lead in the Sunday afternoon matchup as sophomore Roberto Garcia-Vargas took a long pass from senior Dusan Keca and headed it past the Gael goalkeeper in the 22nd minute to put his team up 1-0. This would mark the Highlander forward's second goal of the season and the first assist for the defender Keca.

Saint Mary's would close out the half with two goals of its own and notched a third early in the 2nd half to go up 3-1, but the Highlanders' offense was not done yet.

In the 62nd minute, Keca would help add another goal to the board sinking a penalty kick for his second goal of the season, cutting the Gael lead to 3-2.

In need of an equalizer, UCR turned to a veteran attacker in senior Antonio Lokossou who would ice the game with a goal on a ball played perfectly by fellow senior Adrian Medina. Lokossou would find the back of the net on a roller from eight yards out to tie the match at 3-3.

The match would head to overtime where both teams came up scoreless, forcing a 2nd and final overtime period. 66 seconds into the 2nd overtime, the Gaels would take the match on a goal in the 102nd minute.

The Highlanders truly had a potent attack Sunday afternoon scoring three goals on just six shots to comeback in the match and force extra time. UCR's three goals mark the team's highest scoring efforts so far this season.

Keca was a true bright spot on the day showing off his versatility as a defender with an assist and a goal in the match.

UC Riverside will be back in action next Saturday for the first edition of the Crosstown Showdown as the Highlanders will host Cal Baptist at 7:00 PM
