Men's Soccer Drops Final Home Contest in Overtime

RIVERSIDE—UCR Soccer Stadium saw its final contest of the 2019 season Saturday night, as the UC Riverside Men's Soccer Team fell 2-1 in overtime to visiting Sacramento State. The nine Highlander seniors we're honored in a pregame ceremony before taking their home field for the last time.

With the loss, UCR falls to a 1-4-1 record in conference, but the Highlanders will still have a chance to return to the Big West Conference Tournament. A win over Cal State Fullerton next Saturday would put the team over the Titans in the standings, and a loss of tie for CSUN, who faces a tough UC Irvine team, would effectively give UC Riverside the 6th seed with seven points.

The tale of Saturday's matchup came down to a pair of penalty kicks. In the 34th minute, the Hornets earned a penalty kick after being taken down in the box by the Highlander defense. Matt Carnefix would punch it in to take a 1-0 lead. Less than 20 minutes later, in the 53rd, junior Hugo Magana Jr. got taken down deep in the box to give his teammate, senior Uros Ilic a chance to tie. Ilic did not hesitate firing it by the Hornet keeper.

Just a few minutes later, Sac State's Oscar Govea would earn his second yellow card, resulting in a red and the Hornets would be forced to play down a man for the remainder of the match. UCR would see great opportunities but could not find the net the rest of the night.

An overtime goal in the 96th by Genaro Alfaro would give Sac State its second conference win.

The regular season comes to a close next Saturday at Cal State Fullerton. Kick off is set for 7 PM.
