Highlanders End in Scoreless Draw with LMU

RIVERSIDE— Thursday's battle between the UC Riverside Men's Soccer Team (5-1-1) and visiting Loyola Marymount (4-1-1) was a defensive showdown as the two teams went 110 minutes without a score, ending in the first tie of the season for both programs. The Highlander defense accomplished what no other team has this year in keeping the Lions off the scoreboard to collect its third shutout of the year.

UCR's back line held strong all night, bending but refusing to break with the Lions totaling 21 shots, nine of which were on goal. Senior Edwyn Gutierrez was key in the match making huge plays on his way to a career-high nine saves, his most in nearly a year. His second half performance was truly impressive where he notched seven of the nine.

The Highlanders had their fair share of offense as well totaling 12 shots with five on goal on the night. They would see a few prime opportunities to net the ball but each time came up just short on the attempt.

Sophomore midfielder Caio Guazelli kept up his recent offensive momentum in his second straight start for UCR putting up a team high five shots, three of which were on frame. Fellow mid, senior Ronaldo Lomeli, would follow with three shots of his own.

The Highlander home stand continues this Sunday as the team welcomes GCU to UCR Soccer Stadium. Kick-off is set for 7 PM.
