Men's Soccer Suffers First Home Loss of the Year

RIVERSIDE— For just the third time this season, the UC Riverside Men's Soccer Team (5-2-2) was shut out Friday night against a determined San Diego (7-1-0) defense. The Toreros would need just one score, which they found early in the second half, to earn their seventh win of the season.

The first half was uneventful on the offensive end for both teams as just one shot landed on frame for USD, which would be saved by senior keeper Edwyn Gutierrez, the first of his three on the night. Both squads would go scoreless into the break.

Out of the locker rooms came newly found aggressiveness on each end as after putting just one shot up in the first period, the Highlanders would erupt for 11 total and USD would add eight of its own.

In just the 49th minute, the Toreros made a dangerous run into the UCR box where a few players looked at potential opportunities. After seeing the ball bounced around in the attack, Henry Lander would find Miguel Berry deep in the box for the first and only goal of the match, his seventh of the year.

Junior midfielder Daniel Aguirre returned to action for the Highlanders after sitting out the last two weeks due to injury, and immediately provided a spark for UCR helping move the ball up the field and setting up the team for some great scoring opportunities. Unfortunately, neither his four shot attempts nor his teammates' could find the net. The team's best chance came in the 75th minute when senior Roberto Garcia-Vargas played a shot off a bounce in the box, but it would sail just wide of the goal.

UC Riverside will now have to test its might on the road with a pair of weekday away matches to finish out the non-conference slate. The Highlanders head to Westwood on Tuesday to see UCLA (3-4-1) before visiting Portland (4-2-1) on Friday.
