Highlanders Blank Matadors in Riverside

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside played its third game in seven days on Wednesday night at UC Riverside Soccer Stadium, downing CSUN 1-0.

The win secured the Highlanders' fourth clean sheet of the season.

Brendan Clark registered UCR's only shot in the first 30 minutes, going for the top right corner from the top of the box in the 14th minute.

Defensively, a tight Highlanders back line kept CSUN out of the back of the net despite five shots from the Matadors in the opening 45 minutes. UC Riverside's streak of not allowing a goal reached 147 after a half of play.

Both sides combined for nine shots in the first half, but Clark's strike accounted for the lone attempt on net from either team.

UCR did not skip a beat defensively out of halftime, getting in the way of two quick CSUN attempts in the 47th minute to keep the clean sheet intact.

Adolfo Magana broke the deadlock in the 47th minute with his first goal of the season, a golazo of a bicycle kick on an assist from Oscar Penate

On top of his first assist of the season, Penate ended the night with six shots to lead the Highlanders for the fourth straight game. The junior transfer has now logged 18 shots in his last four games.

UCR logged two of its three shots on goal in the second half and the back line continued its pressure to log its fourth shutout of the year.

UC Riverside is back in action on Saturday, October 16 at Cal State Fullerton for a 7:00 p.m. with the Titans. Live stats will be available on fullertontitans.com.
