Highlanders Drop Shot-Filled Contest in Davis

DAVIS, Calif. - UC Riverside played its third game in seven days on Wednesday afternoon with a 2-1 loss to UC Davis at Aggie Soccer Field.

Both sides traded six shots apiece in the opening 45 minutes between five Highlanders, with Federico Ucar logging two. Ucar had his first shot blocked before sending one off target five minutes before the halftime break.

After UC Davis opened the scoring two minutes into the second half, Jonick Pineda was awarded a penalty in the 59th minute after being tripped by the UC Davis goalkeeper in the box. Pineda buried the penalty to level the match at one and notch his third goal of the season.

UCR would not go down without a fight, earning five of their six corner kicks in the second half while Oscar Penate logged all four of his shots in the final 45 minutes.

The Aggies responded though in the 78th minute with a penalty conversion of their own to seal the 2-1 win.

UCR recorded 14 shots on the afternoon for its ninth double-digit shot performance of the season in 11 outings, led by Penate's four. The junior, who has now logged seven shots in his last three games, put his attempt in the 70th minute towards the top shelf but was denied by the Aggie goalkeeper.

Along with Ucar, Adolfo Magana also recorded two shots on the afternoon while Carlos Gonzalez made three saves.

The Highlanders are back at UC Riverside Soccer Stadium on Saturday, October 9 when they host Sacramento State at 7:00 p.m. Live stats for the match will be available at gohighlanders.com.
