RIVERSIDE, Calif. – UC Riverside posted top performances Saturday morning at the Ag/Ops Course across the men's and women's races at the Highlander Invitational, taking seventh on both the men's and women's sides.
Colette Lowengrub beat her previous top time of the season in the early hours of the weekend, breaking the tape in 20:12.6 for a new season best. Before Saturday, the sophomore's season high came just a month ago at the UC Riverside Invitational, where she placed ninth in 20:31.1.
Saturday's time was two seconds shy of her career best in the 6k, recorded at last year's UC Riverside Invitational.
Riley Jones (27th/21:02.8) and Norma Alvarez (58th/21:40.7) joined Lowengrub, who ran steady in fifth at both the 4k and 6k splits, as the Highlander trio to place in the top 60.
Underclassmen led the way for the Highlander men as well, with Tyler Kaan pacing UCR in 24:05.4 for 14th overall for his better 8k time out of two opportunities this season. The true freshman took 10 seconds off his 8k time from last month's UC Riverside Invitational.
Fellow freshman Lance Denhalter rounded out the pair of first-year Highlanders in the top 30. Denhalter finished in 24:34.7, also beating his time from last month's UC Riverside Invitational by a full half a minute.
UC Riverside will travel to the John Elders Titan Invite at Cal State Fullerton on Friday, October 21 before hosting The Big West Championships the following weekend at the Ag/Ops Course.
