Men’s Soccer Draws with Cal Poly

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside opened the home portion of its Big West schedule on Saturday night at the UC Riverside Soccer Stadium with 1-1 draw with Cal Poly.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • UCR started on a high note with most of the possession early, garnering a sixth-minute attempt from Brendan Clark from outside the 18. Cal Poly later scored on its first shot of the game in the 12th minute.
  • The Highlanders kept pressing, though. Joel Rivera had a golden chance from the right side in the 14th and Noah Lopez followed that up with an attempt inside the 18 six minutes later.
  • Three of UCR's six first-half shots were in the box, including Aleksandar Vukovic's equalizer in the 35th minute off a corner kick.
  • Cal Poly had numbers in the final third in the 56th minute, but Carlos Gonzalez was ready for the initial save plus the stop on the rebound.
  • UC Riverside had a chance for the go-ahead strike and its second goal on a corner of the night in the 87th minute, but with no luck. The Mustangs saw their own chance at goal on a set piece minutes later with the same result.
  • Gonzalez came up with another solid save in the 90th minute as Cal Poly flew forward with numbers before Edward Castro couldn't put home an opportunity on the other end.

HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS

  • Nathan Scott picked up his second assist of the season on Vukovic's equalizer in the 35th minute while Brendan Clark picked up his first of 2023.
  • UC Riverside remained unbeaten against the Mustangs dating back to 2017 with three draws and three wins in that stretch.
