Men’s Soccer Draws with Cal Poly

Highlanders record second consecutive shutout on Central Coast

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - UC Riverside played to a 0-0 draw with Cal Poly on a misty Saturday night at Mustang Memorial Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Christian Ceja fired a blocked shot from straight on in the 16th minute for UCR's first attempt on a wet evening in San Luis Obispo.
  • It was Noah Lopez this time giving the Highlanders a chance at a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute, connecting on a header to the back post that couldn't quite find its target. Lukas Juodkunaitis headed a cross from Luka Lukic also wide in the 21st.
  • UC Riverside continued to control possession through the 22nd minute with a corner on the near side from Tarek Hamideh. Immediately at the other end, a back line crowding the net in front of Carlos Gonzalez kept the match scoreless after three attempts from the Mustangs.
  • Gonzalez, fresh off setting the program's career record for clean sheets on Wednesday, dove to his left in the 39th minute for a save to keep the night scoreless.
  • Lukic was in on goal in the final minute of the first half, but fancy footwork from the Serbian wasn't enough to break the deadlock just before halftime.
  • UCR saw another opportunity again with Hamideh over the ball on a corner kick. The Highlanders batted the ball around in the box in the 62nd minute, then had numbers defensively on a Mustang attacker in the 63rd minute before AJ Meade-Tatum interrupted the attempt with his clearance.
  • Gonzalez was called upon again in the 84th minute and made the save on the doorstep to preserve the scoreless draw. Juodkunaitis nearly put the Highlanders up on the other end in the 85th.

NOTABLES

  • UC Riverside has now posted multiple shutouts in Big West play for the fourth straight season, also doing so in consecutive conference matches in three years out of the last four.
  • Gonzalez recorded clean sheet number 18 for his career while moving into third all-time with his 66th career start. Also in the milestone department, Christian Ceja surpassed 4,000 career minutes.
  • Looking ahead to postseason prognostications, UCR currently holds down the sixth and final spot in the 2024 Big West Championship.
