Highlanders Down UC San Diego on the Road

Hamideh’s strike is the difference in a crucial three points for UCR

LA JOLLA, Calif. – UC Riverside took a pivotal step toward the Big West Championship on Wednesday night at Triton Soccer Stadium with a 1-0 win at UC San Diego.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Tarek Hamideh headed in his first career goal in the 11th minute off the assist from Luka Lukic, giving UCR the early 1-0 lead on the Highlanders' first shot of the night.
  • Carlos Gonzalez intercepted an inswinger in the 18th minute after UC San Diego played a ball into the box in hopes of an equalizer.
  • UCR's two-man wall did the job in the 40th minutes on a direct free kick after the Highlanders conceded one from reasonable range.
  • UC Riverside intercepted passing lanes and brushed aside a flurry of chances from the Tritons in the final minute of play to enter halftime with the 1-0 advantage.
  • The Highlanders' back line forced an errant header at Gonzalez shortly out of halftime to keep a clean sheet intact. UC Riverside continued to force low quality shots, lots of which sailed over the crossbar.
  • UCR went to five in the back with the addition of Ermias Yohannes' fresh legs in the 84th minute in place of the goal scoring Hamideh.

NOTABLES

  • UC Riverside improved to 4-1-2 this season when scoring first. The Highlanders also stretched their unbeaten run to five matches while snapping the Tritons' four-match home win streak.
  • UCR has now evened the head-to-head series at two wins apiece. The Highlanders' other win was also a 1-0 road victory.
  • Three of UC Riverside's last six matches have featured a first-time goal scorer after Hamideh opened his account on Wednesday.
  • Carlos Gonzalez made more history on Wednesday night, collecting his 23rd career win to set his second program record this season. The Santa Ana, Calif., native also picked up career clean sheet number 19.
  • Lukic registered his seventh goal contribution this year and fifth within the first 15 minutes of a match.
