Men’s Soccer Draws with CBU in Crosstown Showdown

Highlanders share the points across town as Gonzalez inches closer to history

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside played to a 0-0 draw at California Baptist on Wednesday night behind four saves from Carlos Gonzalez.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Lukas Juodkunaitis got the Highlanders' feet wet offensively on Wednesday with a pair of shots in the opening nine minutes of play. Luka Lukic put forth UCR's third attempt with a near post attempt in the 18th minute.
  • Lukic was nearly in on goal a minute later from the same location had it not been for a Lancer defender in his way.
  • Carlos Gonzalez made a pair of remarkable saves in the 22nd and 25th minutes, fully outstretching himself to maintain a scoreless draw.
  • Wes Hastings found space in the middle and went for goal in the 56th minute, then Juodkunaitis tried to head home a cross in the 59th for his fourth shot of the night. The Lithuanian was the last touch on a pinball passing sequence through the final third a few minutes later that went out for a goal kick.
  • Wes Hastings drawing a foul in the box in the 70th minute made way for a breakthrough on the scoreboard, but Luka Lukic's attempt from the spot was read the whole way.
  • AJ Meade-Tatum almost found the net in the 80th on an inswinger, nearly netting the defender's fifth career goal.
  • Jackson D'Alessandro and the rest of UCR's back line stepped up in the waning moments of the match, embracing CBU's press and urgency while seeing out the clean sheet.

NOTABLES

  • Carlos Gonzalez recorded his 16th career clean sheet on Wednesday, tying Charles Alamo for most all-time.
  • Gonzalez's shutout streak reached 183 minutes on Wednesday – the third longest of his career - as UCR posted back-to-back clean sheets for the first time since 2022.
  • UCR is now unbeaten in three of its last four matches after the draw across town. The Highlanders recorded their second result all-time at CBU in the process.

UP NEXT
