Men’s Soccer Gets in the Win Column with 2-1 Victory over LMU

Lukic, D’Alessandro find the back of the net in first win of 2024

LOS ANGELES - (September 6, 2024) - UC Riverside (1-3-0, 0-0-0) grabbed its first win of 2024 on Friday night at Sullivan Field with a 2-1 win over LMU.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Luka Lukic wasted no time lighting up the scoreboard with a right-footed shot into the bottom right corner for a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute – the Serbian scored his second goal of the season, both of which have come in the first 10 minutes. Edward Castro looked for a quick second goal with consecutive shots in the ninth and 10th minutes.
  • UCR continued to press early with a 5-1 shot advantage into the 22nd minute and a 7-2 advantage at the half.
  • LMU came out of the break energized and almost equalized in the 50th minute with numbers in the attacking third before putting the finishing touch wide of the left post. Lukic nearly doubled the lead and his scoring tally just seconds later with a bicycle kick.
  • Jackson D'Alessandro recorded his first career goal in the 52nd minute on a rebound at the doorstep following Castro's attempt, giving the Highlanders a 2-0 cushion early in the second half.
  • Carlos Gonzalez came up with a point-blank kick save in the 60th minute and corralled the rebound on the doorstep. Gonzalez, while tested defensively throughout the match, was called upon for just two saves on the night while picking up his 20th career victory.
  • The Lions pulled back a goal in the 86th minute, but UCR withstood the late urgency from an LMU side that recorded 12 of its 14 shots in the second half.

NOTABLES

  • Lukic has now scored UCR's first goal in a match for the second time this season.
  • Gonzalez is now the third goalkeeper in program history to record 20 career wins.
  • Ermias Yohannes made his collegiate debut with 28 minutes off the bench, while Tarek Hamideh made his first collegiate start with 79 minutes and a shot in the midfield.
