RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Highlanders hosted the Matadors of CSUN tonight as both teams began conference play. UCR finished its non-conference schedule with a 2-3-3 record, playing its last two matches to draws. CSUN entered the match with a 5-1-3 record, winners of three of its last four.
UCR recorded the match's first shot (6') as
Jakob Schnitzler put it on target but it was blocked by the CSUN defense. A couple of minutes later the Matadors recorded their only shot on goal of the first when Justin Sosa clanked it off the crossbar in the 13'.
The second half started with
Adrian Diaz putting one on target but Dorian Drucks came up with the save. Then CSUN had a chance when Seydou Diop took a shot and missed.
Diop then had a shot blocked and
Andrew Hermosillo came up with a big save on a shot by Daniel Garcia.
UCR's next shot came almost 15 minutes later when
Andrija Radonjic had his shot blocked. Diaz followed up a couple of minutes later but Drucks came up with another big save for CSUN.
The Highlanders in the 78' had a great chance to get on the board as
Eric Martinez had a great look but missed right of the goal. A minute later
Wyatt Ponting had a look but he, too, missed to the right.
Edward Castro put another shot on goal but a save by Drucks preserved the shutout.
In the 86' CSUN broke through on a goal by Enrique Pineda that beat Hermosillo to the left side giving the Matadors a 1-0 lead. UCR tried to respond but ultimately fell short.
Up next for UCR is a road trip to UC Santa Barbara on Saturday night. Kickoff is 7PM.
