Simi Valley, CA - Using the lowest team round of the tournament on Tuesday, the UC Riverside men's golf leapfrogged into second place out of 17 teams to finish play at the Bill Cullum Invitational on the par-72, 6,796-yard course at Wood Ranch Golf Course.
The Highlanders found themselves tied for fourth place with the final round remaining, but used a 67, 69, 69 and 70 in the third round to bring their three-round total to 851, just eight strokes behind the winner, University of the Pacific.
After shooting a career-low 66 in the second round on Monday, junior
Kevin Fitzgerald (pictured) continued to lead the Highlanders squad with a 67 on Tuesday as he recorded his best-ever finish in a tournament with a second place berth.
His three-round 208 total was just one stroke off Pacific's Alex Johnson (207) for individual honors and just two strokes off the tournament record of 206 set by Tristan Bierenbroodspot of Arizona State in 2008.
As a team UC Riverside led all squads in par-4 scoring finishing just one-over-par as a group, while Fitzgerald led all competitors in the same category finishing six-under.
Tom Lo finished tied for seventh individually with a three-round 213 (75-69-69), while
Scott Clayton (73-74-69) and
Robbie Mamo (75-71-70) fired identical 216 scores to tie for 15th.
Andrew Patipaksiri tied for 41st with a 224 (74-73-77).
Playing as individuals,
Matt Fitzgerald tied for 74th while
Daniel Brainard finished 96th.
This tournament concludes the Highlanders fall portion of their 2009-10 schedule. They next hit the links on February 1-2, 2010 at the Anteater Invitational in Costa Mesa, CA.
First & Second Rounds
Simi Valley, CA - The UC Riverside men's golf team cut 18 strokes between their first and second round scores on Monday at the Bill Cullum Invitational on the par 72, 6,796 yard course at Wood Ranch Golf Course to tie for fourth place out of 17 squads with one round remaining.
The Highlanders opened up with a 297 team score in the first round but used scores of 66, 69, 71 and 73 to total 279 in the second round, finishing with a two-round 576 total.
UCR is tied with Oral Roberts for fourth place but just two strokes behind third-place UC Santa Barbara and four strokes behind the second place team Cal State Northridge. The University of the Pacific is the current clubhouse leader with a two-round 560.
Junior
Kevin Fitzgerald shot a career-low 66 in the second round to lead the Highlanders contingent tied for sixth place with a 141 (75-66). Sophomore
Tom Lo is tied for 16th with a 75-69=144, while freshman
Robbie Mamo is tied for 26th with a two-round 146 (75-71).
Senior
Scott Clayton and junior
Andrew Patipaksiri fired identical scores of 147 to tie for 36th. Playing as individuals, freshman

Pacific's Alex Johnson is the current individual leader firing scores of 66-68=134.
