From the awards ballot ... Brenda Martinez, UCR track: She was the NCAA West Regional champion and finished second in the 1500 meters at the NCAA national championship meet, .92 of a second behind winner Susan Kuijken of Florida State. It was the highest finish by a UCR athlete in NCAA competition since the school's move to Division I, and she followed that up by finishing ninth in the 800 at the U.S. Outdoor Track and Field championships, then winning four of six races in Europe this summer. And she still has her senior year ahead.
