Softball Drops Games To Boise State And San Diego To Open Season

San Diego, CA - The UC Riverside softball team opened the 2010 season on Saturday with an 8-4 loss against Boise State and a 7-4 loss at San Diego at the USD Softball Complex.
In the first game against Boise State, UCR started things off with one run in the first inning as Marissa Alvidrez's single to left field scored Ariel Shore from third base. The Broncos quickly countered, however, with two runs in the bottom of the first inning and two more runs in the third inning to take a 4-1 lead.
The Highlanders rallied back for three runs in the top of the fourth inning to tie the game at 4-4. Kameryn Hebenton started things off with a single that scored Alexis Villamor from second, followed by Brittney's Keeney's single to score Hebenton and Shore from second and third base respectively.
In the bottom of the fourth, Boise State blew the game open by scoring four runs to take an 8-4 advantage. Neither team plated a run after that as the Broncos held on for the win.
Against San Diego later in the day, the game started out the same way as the first game as UCR again got on board in the first inning, this time as Keeney's single to center field scored Shore from second base. The Torreros then plated two across in the bottom of the first inning to take a 2-1 lead.
The Highlanders rallied for two runs in the top of the fourth on a Kayla White two RBI home run -- the first of her career. San Diego then countered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the frame to retake the lead 5-3.
A single run in the top of the fifth for the Highlanders brought them to within one, 5-4, but the Torreros scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to seal the 7-4 win.
Keeney (pictured) led UCR with three RBI on the day while Shore led with three runs.
The Highlanders return to Amy S. Harrison Field in Riverside to play both these teams on Sunday, Feb. 14. First pitch is slated for 9:00 am.
