
Softball Sweeps Boise State 9-8 And San Diego 6-1 For Two Wins Sunday

Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside softball team rebounded on Sunday for two wins against Boise State and San Diego after dropping games to those same teams on Saturday. The Highlanders defeated the Broncos 9-8 and the Torreros 6-1 to improve to 2-2 on the young season.
In the first game, BSU scored two runs off UCR starting pitcher Amy Lwin in the top of the first inning, but the Highlanders countered by scoring four runs on five hits in the bottom half of the frame.
Ariel Shore started started things off with a single and later advanced to third after a Kameryn Hebenton double down the left field line. Brittney Keeney then belted a three-RBI home run to give UCR a 3-2 lead. One batter later, Alvidrez singled and was eventually brought home on a Taylor Thomas single to center field, pushing the Highlanders advantage to 4-2.
Not to be out done, the Broncos staged a comeback in the second inning by scoring three runs on two hits and one error to retake the lead, 5-4.
UCR plated one run in the bottom of the third inning to the tie the score at 5-5 and proceeded to score three runs in the next inning to take an 8-5 margin. However, BSU scored two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to tie the game at 8-8.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Alvidrez doubled through the right side to start things off and advanced to third on a Kayla White sacrifice. With two outs, Taylor Thomas provided the winning hit as her single to left field scored Alvidrez for the 9-8 victory.
Keeney led the team with five RBI while Alvidrez and Keeney added three hits each and three different players had two runs apiece.
With one win under their belts, the Highlanders looked to make it two in a row as they faced San Diego in the second game.
UCR did all their scoring in the third and fourth innings as they plated three runs in each.
With the bases loaded for the Highlanders in the third, Keeney's single to right field drove in two runs and Jessica Vasser's single to center field scored one for a 3-0 lead.
The next inning, the bases were again loaded and Keeney's sacrifice scored White from third. Two batters later, Vasser's single scored the other two runs to push the Highlanders' lead to 6-0.
San Diego got one run back in the top of the sixth to close the margin to 6-1, but could get no closer as UCR held on for the win.
Both Vasser and Keeney tallied three RBI for the game, while four different players had two hits each.
Alvidrez got the win in both games for UCR to improve to 2-1 overall. Against San Diego in the second game, she pitched all seven innings and gave up just three hits and allowed one run, while against BSU, she came in for relief for two innings and gave up no runs and no hits.
The Highlanders return to action in Palo Alto, CA at the Stanford Nike Invitational beginning Friday, Feb. 19 at 12:15 pm.
