Box Score - Buffalo 5, UC Riverside 4
Box Score - UC Riverside 3, Buffalo 1
Riverside, CA - UC Riverside softball split of doubleheader with Buffalo on Tuesday afternoon at Amy S. Harrison Field, losing in the first game 5-4, but coming away with a 3-1 victory in the second game.
Buffalo started things off in game one with two runs in the first inning, but the Highlanders cut the advantage in half just one inning later as Marissa Alvidrez led off with a solo home run to left field.
The score stayed the same through the next three innings until Buffalo plated another run in the top of the sixth to bring their advantage to 3-1. UCR put their rally caps on, however, and proceeded to score three runs in their respective half inning to lead 4-3.
After two lead-off singles and an error to load the bases in the sixth, a fielder's choice brought home one run, but got one out. Another single again loaded the bases, and a double by Alexis Villamor brought two more runs across, giving UCR their first lead of the game. However, the Highlanders left two runners on base as two straight outs ended the inning.
The Bulls wouldn't go quietly in the seventh inning as they responded to UCR's rally with one of their own, scoring two runs on four hits to retake the lead 5-4.
The Highlanders looked for another rally in the seventh to get the win, but they couldn't get a run across as they eventually fell 5-4 to Buffalo.
Amy Lwin picked up her fourth loss on the year, allowing the game-winning runs in three innings of work. Sharon Barr earned the win for the Bulls, allowing two hits in 1.2 innings.
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Highlanders took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning as Lauren Molina scored on a Brittany Keeney single up the middle.
Buffalo tied the game in the top of the sixth inning with one run, but UCR scored two in their respective frame to stake a 3-1 advantage. With runners at first and third, Keeney lined a two-RBI double to left field, scoring both runners.
The Bulls had one base runner get on in the seventh, but the Highlanders got three outs for the 3-1 win. Lauren Molina pitched a complete game, earning her first win of the season. Sharon Barr was saddled with the loss for Buffalo.
On the day, Keeney and Taylor Thomas had three hits apiece while Thomas scored two runs and Keeney led with four RBI.
The Highlanders continue to play at home as they host the Amy S. Harrison Classic on Mar. 12-14 at Amy S. Harrison Field in Riverside. UCR starts off the tournament with a doubleheader against Idaho State at 9:00 am on Friday.
