Box Score - Long Beach State 2, UC Riverside 0
Box Score - Long Beach State 4, UC Riverside 1
Long Beach, CA - The Long Beach State 49ers were too much for the UC Riverside softball team on Friday afternoon as they won 2-0 and 4-1 to take the doubleheader in the three-game series at 49er Softball Complex in Big West Conference action.
The Highlanders fall to 22-31 overall and 7-13 in league play, while LBSU improves to 25-26, 9-11.
In game one, the 49ers got to UCR starting pitcher Marissa Alvidrez early by scoring one run in the first inning. With two outs, Caitrin DeBaun turned on a 1-1 offering and laced a single to right field to keep the inning alive. One batter later, Brandy Reyes hit a RBI double to right center, scoring Debaun from first for a 1-0 lead.
Long Beach State added an unearned run in the third inning to take a 2-0 advantage. Casey Burba reached on an error by Taylor Thomas, and was eventually brought home by a sacrifice fly.
With one out in the fourth inning, the Highlanders used a single by Thomas and a 49er error to put runners at first and second base. A fielder's choice then got out the lead runner at third, but UCR still had runners on the base paths with two outs. A hit would have halved the margin, but the Highlanders left the runners on base when a strikeout ended the threat.
Alvidrez kept the 49ers bats at bay and did not allow Long Beach to get another run after the third.
Unfortunately, the top of the fourth proved to be the only real scoring opportunity for UCR, as they went three-up, three-down in each of the remaining innings for the 2-0 loss.
Brooke Turner (12-10) earned the win for LBSU, shutting out the Highlanders while allowing just two hits. Alvidrez (15-15) gave up just one earned run in the loss.
Game two started in similar fashion to game one as Long Beach took a 3-0 lead after two innings. With one out in the first, UCR pitcher Amy Lwin gave up a single, a walk, and a double for the first run, while a sac fly scored the next run. The 49ers added their third run off another sac fly in the second inning.
The Highlanders made a rally in the fifth inning as they got one run back. With one out, Kayla White (pictured) doubled down the left field line and advanced to third on a Kameryn Hebenton bunt. Ariel Shore then reached on a fielder's choice, which allowed White to score to cut the lead to 3-1.
However, the 49ers got that run back in the sixth inning to increase the lead back to three at 4-1 as the Highlanders were retired in order in the top of the seventh to end the game.
Taylor Petty (10-14) picked up the win for LBSU, pitching all seven innings and giving up one run. Lwin was saddled with the loss for UCR, allowing three earned runs in 3.1 innings of work.
On the day, Thomas led the squad with two hits while White scored the lone run and Shore had the lone RBI.
The Highlanders and 49ers face off again on Saturday, May 15 at 1:00 pm in Long Beach, CA to conclude the 2010 season.
