UCR Puts Winning Run At The Plate But Falls 7-5 To Cal State Northridge

Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside softball team had the winning run at the plate on Sunday afternoon against Cal State Northridge in the bottom of the seventh inning, but could not get a run across as the Matadors hung on for the 7-5 win in Big West Conference action at Amy S. Harrison Field on Senior Day.
UCR's seventh-straight loss drops them to 22-29 overall and 7-11 in league play while the Matadors improve to 29-21 and 13-5.
The Highlanders were down 7-5 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning and needed to score two runs to send the game into extra frames, or three runs to get the come-from-behind win.
Coco Villamor started things off with a double down the left field line for UCR's first baserunner. After one out, Marissa Alvidrez was walked and Villamor advanced to third on a wild pitch, giving the team runners at the corners.
The next batter, Taylor Thomas, represented the winning run, but she flied out to right field for the second out of the inning. Brittany Keeney then came to bat, but she too flied out to the right fielder, ending the inning and the game as CSUN held on for the 7-5 win.
Alvidrez pitched all seven innings for the Highlanders but was saddled with the loss, allowing five earned runs and seven hits. Cal State Northridge's Debbie Duran earned the win by tossing two innings of one-run relief.
Looking to redeem themselves after getting mercy-ruled in Saturday's doubleheader, UC Riverside took an early 1-0 lead on a two-out RBI single from Brooke Hebenton in the second inning.
The Matadors then took the lead with a two-RBI home run in the fourth inning by Christina Saenz to give them a 2-1 advantage. The Highlanders countered in their respective frame as a Hebenton two-RBI home run put UCR on top 3-2.
After a single run in the fifth inning pushed UCR's margin to 4-2, CSUN rallied for three in the sixth to retake the lead 5-4.
The Highlanders tied the game at five apiece in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly from Kayla White that scored Keeney from third.
Cal State Northridge used a pinch-hitter to lead off the seventh, and Kristen Mihm came up big as she hit a solo home run to left center field to lift the Matadors to a 6-5 margin. With two outs, CSUN added an insurance run, taking a 7-5 advantage on a Jaci Carlsen single.
UC Riverside then batted in the seventh looking to get the come-from-behind win, but could not plate a run as the the Matadors completed the Big West sweep.
On the day, Hebenton led the squad going 2-of-3 with three RBI and a run.
The Highlanders conclude the regular season with a three-game series at Long Beach State beginning on Friday, May 14 in Long Beach, CA.
