Fitzgerald Ties For Medalist Honors After 36-Hole Qualifying at Cal State Amateur
6/23/2010 8:16:37 AM | Men's Golf
UC Riverside men's golfer Kevin Fitzgerald shot 70-71--141 in stroke-play rounds on Monday and Tuesday to earn co-medalist honors at the 99th California State Amateur Championship at Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club and La Jolla Country Club.
Fitzgerald tied with Scott Almquist of Coto de Caza through the qualifying stages to earn co-medalist honors. Match play starts on Wednesday morning with Fitzgerald seeded No. 2. He will tee off against Robert Funk, No. 31 seed, at 8:42 AM.
Graduated senior Scott Clayton also made the match play stage at the California State Amateur. He is seeded No. 18 and will tee off against Michael Drake (No. 15), the 2010 Long Beach Match Play champion, at 8:51 AM.
The California Amateur Championship is one of the nation’s oldest state amateur golf championships. Although there were other tournaments held early in the 20th century that called themselves California state amateurs, the California Amateur Championship dates its origins from 1912 when the California Golf Association was organized.
Match play continues through Saturday, where a final 36-hole match will determine the winner. For more information, complete pairings, and live results, please visit the California State Amateur site.
