Kevin Fitzgerald's Run At Cal State Amateur Ends In Quarterfinals

UC Riverside's Kevin Fitzgerald had his run at the 99th Annual California State Amateur Championship come to an end on Friday morning with a 3 and 1 match play loss to Grant Norton in the quarterfinals.
Fitzgerald found himself in a hole after being three down through the front nine of play. Two consecutive birdies at holes 10 and 11 cut Norton's lead to one, but Fitzgerald rattled off two straight bogeys on holes 12 and 13 to go back to being three down.
The senior from Riverside never cut the lead closer than two after that as Norton went on for the 3 and 1 win.
During the stroke play portion of the tournament earlier in the week, Fitzgerald earned co-medalist honors with scores of 70-71=141 and was seeded No. 2 heading into match play.
He defeated Robert Funk 3 and 2 in the Round of 32 on Wednesday and used a 7 and 5 victory over Michael Drake in the Round of 16 on Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals on Friday.
