Ryan's Remarks: A New Blog From Men's Tennis Player Ryan Stanbury
1/27/2011 8:02:18 AM | Men's Tennis
UC Riverside men's tennis senior Ryan Stanbury has started writing a blog for gohighlanders.com. Curious about what it's like to be a student-athlete at an NCAA Division I institution? Then Ryan's Remarks are for you!
Check out Ryan's third installment on the 2010-11 Highlanders men's tennis program below, or brush up on his first two blogs. Want to ask Ryan questions? Go ahead and email your questions and he will answer them for you on this blog.
Let’s call a spade a spade… it has been a brutal beginning to our season so far, as we have started the season with four consecutive losses. We suffered an agonizing defeat to the University of Nevada Reno in our season opener, losing the match 4-3. In that match, we lost the doubles point by the narrowest of margins, losing the deciding doubles match in a tiebreaker on court one.
Despite having an opportunity to serve for the match, we were unable to close the door in what would become a reoccurring problem for us in matches to come.
One positive we took out of this match as a team was our resilience in coming back from a difficult doubles loss and making a real close match out of it in singles. To Nevada’s credit they did not let up after doubles and were able to come away with the victory.
After the match, which was played in Northridge, we drove to my parent’s house in the Hollywood area and enjoyed a delectable team meal meticulously prepared by my wonderful mother. I could write an entire page about the meal in and of itself, but to appease the powers who run this blog I will refrain.
Once seated at the table, we all watched in amazement as the “French Connection,” Felix Macharez expertly stacked copious quantities of food onto his plate, and then proceeded to devour it in a manner reminiscent of Tom Hanks in the Robert Zemeckis film “Castaway.” Further entertainment was presented by Simon “J Money” Peters as he provided us with movie reviews spanning from the early 1990’s until present day, while occasionally sprinkling in his tales of epic grandeur.
Then we had a quick turnaround and got back on the road for a nationally ranked San Diego State team who gave us an old-fashioned beat down. There were a few matches that were competitive that day, but we were unable to turn any of them in our favor, and for the most part we were simply out-classed in singles and doubles as we lost 7-0.
Following the match we stopped at the 4.0 Deli right near SDSU’s campus and literally inhaled our sandwiches, salads, and fruit smoothies. The Jets vs. Patriots game was on T.V. and Mike Conroy and I traded playful jabs as his Patriots nabbed an early lead, only to be caught from behind by my Jets.
We had a great week of practice leading up to our trip to Arizona, which I will catch you up on later this week…but that’s all the time I have for now as I must get back to impersonating an academic.
