Ryan's Remarks: A New Blog From Men's Tennis Player Ryan Stanbury
2/17/2011 12:53:06 PM | Men's Tennis
UC Riverside men's tennis senior Ryan Stanbury has started writing a blog for gohighlanders.com. Curious about what it's like to be a student-athlete at an NCAA Division I institution? Then Ryan's Remarks are for you!
Check out Ryan's fifth installment on the 2010-11 Highlanders men's tennis program below, or brush up on his first four blogs. Want to ask Ryan questions? Go ahead and email your questions and he will answer them for you on this blog.
A lot has happened since my last blog back in January. The team won our home opener on January 29th against Vanguard University 5-2. We won the doubles point in this match, our first of the year, and then proceeded to win four of the six singles matches for a comfortable victory.
The following weekend we lost a hard-fought match to the Kangaroo’s from University of Missouri Kansas City. After winning the doubles point, we lost three first set tie-breakers on courts 2, 3, and 4 which turned the momentum in the Kangaroo’s favor. Although we battled back, we ultimately lost a close match 5-2. We lost three set matches on courts 1 and 5, which proved to be the difference.
After this tough match, we traveled to Murrieta to face UC San Diego on Super Bowl Sunday. Perhaps we were mentally and physically fatigued from the previous day’s events, because we did not play our best tennis on this day. We lost the doubles point, and then proceeded to lose 5 of the 6 singles matches. This was a bitter pill to swallow because if we had played to our capabilities, I believe we could have won both matches that weekend.
Last weekend we were in Las Vegas where we played Utah State, UNLV, and Idaho State. We lost our first two matches against USU and UNLV, but came back strong with a 6-1 victory over Idaho State on Sunday. Our captain Sean Peterson capped the day with a dramatic 3-set victory at the number 6 singles position, securing the first dual match singles win of his career.
In my next blog I will tell you guys more about our trip to Vegas, as well as put some amateur video of the trip taken by yours truly on the blog. That way you can see how it really goes down!
Weather permitting, we have an enormous match tomorrow (Friday, February 18) at 10 AM against the University of Oregon Ducks at Andulka Park, just a couple minutes away from campus by car. It is rare to have a Pac-10 school come play us at home, and we would love to have a good crowd out there for the match. Hope to see you all there.
