Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside softball team (3-6) dropped its two final games of the aTen Construction Tournament on Sunday, falling 6-1 to Minnesota and 4-0 to Loyola Marymount at Amy S. Harrison Field.
In the first game, Minnesota opened with a single run in the top of the first. UCR threatened in the next inning with the bases loaded and one out, but could not get a run across.
The Gophers (3-6) opened up the game in the third, hitting back-to-back home runs to take a 5-0 margin. In the bottom of the third, the Highlanders again had two baserunners, but could not convert them into runs.
After a scoreless fourth and fifth for both teams, the Highlanders scored a single run in the sixth off a wild pitch from Minnesota's Sara Moulton. The Gophers got that run back in the top of the seventh, however, and held on for the 6-1 win.
Amy Lwin took the loss for the Highlanders, allowing four runs to score in two innings of work. Casey Suda came on in relief, pitching five innings and giving up two runs for the Highlanders. Moulton pitched a complete game to earn the win for Minnesota.
In game two, Loyola Marymount's pitcher Dana Waldusky limited the Highlanders to just two hits and no runs.
The Lions (5-4) offense scored three runs in the third inning off three hits and two UCR errors. LMU added an insurance run in the top of the seventh as the Highlanders went in order in the bottom of the frame to conclude the game.
Jordyn McDonald was saddled with the loss for the Highlanders, giving up just one earned run in seven innings.
UC Riverside continues its homestand with a doubleheader against Hawaii on Tuesday, February 22 at noon at Amy S. Harrison Field in Riverside.
